Those communities whose local councils were forcibly merged and want their council back, have been promised by all political parties, except the Liberal/National Party, that come the State election in March next year if there is a change of government, they will be granted a plebiscite to determine whether they can demerge.
Communities who want to #DemergeNow should start taking all necessary action to ensure that this happens.
#DEMERGENOW !

COMMUNITIES DEMAND TO DEMERGE NOW - 25 Oct 2018
Many communities across NSW whose councils were forced to merge in 2016 want to get their councils back by way of a binding referendum.
Communities like Pittwater and Tumbarumba have already started the process by lodging a proposal with the Govt, however they have had no meaningful response. Other communities are waiting with baseball bats to get their referendum after helping throw the Govt out of office at the March 2019 State election.
SOCC Media Releases https://savehuntershill.files.wordpress.com/…/socc-media-co…
The NSW Local Government association at its recent conference overwhelmingly voted to support these communities.
At the media conference outside Parliament House on 25 October, Peter Primrose Labor Shadow Minister for Local Government, David Shoebridge The Greens and Robert Borsak SF&F all strongly committed to help these communities get their councils back. The Christian Democrats and independents are also supportive.
It is only the Liberal/National Coalition that is not listening and has no respect for or understanding of local democracy. Affected communities demand to #DemergeNow !

All strongly supported local communites forced to merge getting their council back, if that is their wish.
'Save Tumbarumba Shire' is famous for its DEMERGE! signs and the colour orange on T-shirts, buildings and properties. This community group made a big impression at the NSW Local Government Conference, and helped produce a very significant resolution supporting communities across the State in getting their councils back.

LIBERALS FACING A BACKLASH OVER COUNCIL MERGERS Opposition leader Luke Foley said about the Liberal Government: “They forced mergers, they rigged boundaries and people across NSW punished them." In Ryde the swing against the Liberal Party reached close to 15% and in Lane Cove it was up to 10%. In Hunters Hill the fortunes of former lobbyist and Liberal Zac Miles’ mayoral ambitions will be determined by the preferences of two independents. Premier Gladys Berejiklian response was only that she was "pleased with the outcome across the board because the community has had its say". http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/liberals-facing-a-backlash-as-voters-deliver-verdict-on-council-mergers-20170910-gyem0s.html |

BEREJIKLIAN – WITHDRAW FORCED MERGERS NOW!
https://youtu.be/yELbyty36hQ
Community rallies across NSW on 12 May 2017 have called on the Berejiklian Government to WITHDRAW all forced council mergers NOW!
One year from ‘Baird’s Day of Infamy’ and the Government’s attempted destruction of eighty one local councils, the community battle against forced amalgamations is stronger than ever. There have been massive swings against the Liberal/National Party in recent by-elections over this issue and successful court cases showing the process to be legally flawed. The community will win this battle.

MEDIA RELEASE: TUESDAY 21 MARCH 2017
ARE THE LIBERAL PARTY AND ITS CANDIDATES SUPPORTING FORCED COUNCIL MERGERS OR THE COMMUNITY?
The Liberal Party has pre-selected candidates for North Shore and Manly willing to force council mergers upon communities who strongly object to losing their local identity and democracy, says Save Our Councils Coalition (SOCC).
“The Liberal North Shore candidate is Felicity Wilson former Deputy Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia (NSW), the most powerful Australian development lobby group and a key forced council mergers supporter,” SOCC spokesman Phil Jenkyn said.
“It was Felicity Wilson who said in a Property Council submission to the Boundary Council Review in 2016: ‘We strongly support the NSW Government plans to reduce the number of councils in Sydney and across the state. If necessary, compulsory amalgamations must be undertaken.’
“It is the Property Council that wants to destroy local democracy, remove planning powers from local residents, fast track development, ignore community wishes and create councils arguably the biggest in the OECD”, Jenkyn added.
“In the Manly electorate James Griffin has been pre-selected by the Liberal Party, supported by Mike Baird. Griffin works for KPMG and assisted Baird in his last three election campaigns,” SOCC President and Manly resident Brian Halstead said.
“James Griffin was a Liberal councillor on Manly Council until 2016. The Liberal Party forcibly merged Manly, Warringah and Pittwater Councils without allowing a plebiscite or poll of residents. The local Manly community will finish up with 3 councillors out of 15 on a mega council, with loss of control and increased risk of overdevelopment.
“These candidates are likely to toe the Liberal Party line and the community’s wishes and needs will be pushed aside. Communities can make their views felt in these By-elections and Put the Libs Last,” said Halstead.

Peter C. Astridge Hunters Hill Council has been there over 155 years and financially fit. Has anyone in Ryde been out to count the pot holes and rough roads lately in the Ryde area and weed infestations everywhere also the ugly hideous developments going up everywhere? Let's not mention the hungry rangers lurking around corners and concrete. We as a community of HH will have no representation on the merged council and we will be dictated to by the liberal rats in Macquarie Street and they are treating the people of NSW, with contempt. No thanks.... Restore democracy.

Media Release: Power of the People on Show at Orange By-Election 13 November 2016
Historic swings against the NSW National Party in the Orange by-election are yet another clear example of people power, with voters sending a clear message to the NSW Government on forced council amalgamations, Local Government NSW said today. LGNSW President Keith Rhoades called on Premier Mike Baird to finally heed the deep community anger at forced council amalgamations.
“LGNSW has said all along that local government is about local democracy and local representation,” Clr Rhoades said. “Now the people have spoken loud and clear: the community wants to keep local government local. “Mike Baird and Paul Toole have never had a mandate to force council amalgamations, and this result is proof.
“The Government needs to rethink its stance on forced amalgamations, just as it did on the greyhound ban, and rule out any further forced amalgamations.” Clr Rhoades was speaking after reported swings of up to 60% against the National Party in some booths in the formerly safe seat of Orange. Labor was returned comfortably in Wollongong and Canterbury.
Counting was continuing on Sunday, but pundits said there was a strong possibility that Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party candidate Philip Donato, who has campaigned against forced amalgamations, would be elected on Labor preferences in Orange. “These are hugely significant results, and demonstrate very clearly that communities will not tolerate a Government that doesn’t respect their right to have a say in their day-to-day lives,” Clr Rhoades said.
“This massive repudiation of forced amalgamations comes hot on the heels of the September 10 local government elections, where voters of stand-alone councils sent an equally clear ‘back off’ message to the Liberal/National Government. “Now’s the time for Mike Baird and Paul Toole to show the community that they are listening, and put an end to this crash or crash-through forced amalgamation approach.”

Save Hunters Hill Municipality A proper independent large and statistically valid survey was done - across the whole municipality and included all gender / age group variants. There was huge majority opposition to amalgamation - consistent with every other poll / survey done in Hunters Hill when-ever the Government has attempted to force amalgamation. Yet another poll would cost a large amount of money and would show exactly the same thing. There is only a minority of residents that want amalgamation. Generally these people do everything they can to denigrate the council to try and get people to agree with them.

Hunters Hill Councillors openly rejected the Governments letter calling for "Expressions of Interest" for councillors and GMs to seek "a role" in new forcably merged councils, and the associated condition that they tick boxes and sign a "pledge of support" for promoting the new forceably amalgamated councils. Councillors called the letter "evil" and "antidemocratic" for seeking to pressure councillors to pledge support to represent the NSW Liberal Government agenda instead of representing the best interests and majority wishes of their local communities.

GOVERNMENT WOULD FACE A MASSIVE HURDLE
Save Our Councils Coalition (SOCC) called a Media conference under the „Tree of Knowledge‟ behind Parliament House immediately after the Premier‟s announcement. Representatives from community groups, residents, councillors and politicians from all political parties attended. However there was one exception, there was no one present from the Liberal/National Party. They were all hiding in Parliament House - keeping well away from the people, the people they are supposed to represent. The Government would face a massive hurdle if it tried to put legislation through the Upper House, with Labor and the crossbenchers who hold the balance of power, vowing to block any forced amalgamations.
*"We call on the Premier to review this steamrolling campaign," Christian Democrat MP Fred Nile said.
*Shooters MP Robert Borsak expressed his opposition -"What communities want they should be entitled to have, and that is not being forced by governments to do things that aren't in the interests of local communities."
*"Every politician in the Parliament except the Coalition is saying this is a sham and they won't support increased legislative powers for the Government," Greens MP David Shoebridge said.

BAIRD WILL NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION An interview on the Alan Jones Radio Program on 2GB this morning revealed that the Baird government is moving forward with forced amalgamations. He repeatedly refused to answer YES or NO to forced amalgamations so the reasonable conclusion is that he will be forcing councils to amalgamate despite enormous community opposition. BAIRD'S ARROGANCE ASTONISHING OVER MERGERS
Mike Baird wants to lock in council mergers across the state by the end of the year, setting the scene for pitched battles with local governments that do not want to bend.
"We have come to the end of the road," the Premier said on Tuesday. "We are determined to get on with this," he said at the release of the report by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

Sabrina Ferguson 70%? More like more than 85%. Here's the sad thing. We can vote him out at the next election but by then the damage will have been done, maybe not to total fruition but to a point of wreckage of our councils and our community. I am disgusted that our council only has 30 days to respond. Baird is being arrogant. This is all about making the State govt's bottom line look better, not about the people in the community. They are telling us what is good for us, not listening to us saying what we KNOW is good for us. I'm hoping for a miracle.
Karen Antonios Pensabene Mr Baird has underestimated the community. He will not listen to 70% of residents who oppose forced amalgamations! He will pay for it!

NSW COUNCILS STILL UNCLEAR WHETHER AMALGAMATIONS WILL GO AHEAD
IPART chairman Dr Peter Boxall said each council's proposals had been assessed and deemed "fit" or "not fit" according to the Government's criteria. But he had not released any details on which councils fell into either category. But there are still loud criticisms of the process, with the Save our Councils (SOC) organisation sayingthe government made up its mind on amalgamations long ago. "The Premier is not telling the truth and everybody knows it," Phil Jenkyn from SOC said. "I mean anybody who's studied the expert reports of Professor [Brian] Dollery or Percy Allan and the others knows that bigger is not better.

Sabrina Ferguson Seriously ... I think we are doomed. Baird hates Ryde and wants to see it broken up. This impacts on us, worse luck. I believe IPART will recommend a Joint Regional Authority for Ryde, Hunter's Hill and Lane Cove. Baird can ignore that. He can also choose not to release the IPART findings to the public. That stinks. There is a hidden agenda here. The JRA model is the best possible for Hunter's Hill. What point is there merging into a mega council which may include Mosman (on the other side of the Bridge; what do we have in common??) and which won't give current residents of Hunter's Hill Council their own dedicated Councillor? I hope you are lobbying Anthony Roberts and Victor Dominello. I work for Ryde Business Forum and we are in the process of lobbying them to vote against amalgamation. It will take courage for them to stand up to Baird, but really! More than 80% of people in Ryde, Hunter's HIll and Lane Cove stated in surveys they don't want amalgamation. I am a Hunters Hill resident, for the record. And I sure as heck don't want amalgamation.

PROTESTERS TAKE AIM AT PREMIER OVER FORCED AMALGAMATIONS
Protesters worried about council mergers across New South Wales have taken aim at the Premier. Save Our Councils Coalition supporters confronted the Premier Mike Baird at Manly today with calls of “no forced amalgamations”, “you are not listening to the people” and “keep your promise Mr Baird”. But amid fears of sackings and rate rises, Mike Baird is making no apologies for his plan to reduce the number of local councils.

A SOCC DELEGATION MET PREMIER BAIRD AT MANLY ON 24 September 2015.
He was asked two simple questions - will you commit to no forced amalgamations of councils and will you sign the Pledge? He refused both requests. He said that after IPART reports in mid-October the Government will then discuss mergers with all councils and where it deems appropriate force mergers. He has no mandate to do this, and no mandate to destroy local councils and local democracy. All other political parties are strongly opposed to such actions and all have signed the Pledge. People power will prevail!

PLAN TO HASTEN COUNCIL MERGERS AS MINISTER PAUL TOOLE AWAITS IPART REPORT.
Forced council mergers would be made easier and quicker for the NSW government under potential changes to be considered by Minister for Local Government Paul Toole within months. As Mr Toole prepares to give evidence to a parliamentary inquiry into local government on Monday in Wagga, his office rejected a report that the government is preparing to sack every council and mayor in NSW to implement its amalgamations agenda.

EMBARRASSING BACKDOWN OVER MERGERS
The head of the Office of Local Government was forced into an embarrassing backdown when conceding she did not know what impact council mergers would have on rates. The office's chief executive, Marcia Doheny, was grilled during her appearance before an upper house inquiry into local government, which is examining the state government's push to reduce the number of NSW councils through its "Fit for the Future" process. Ms Doheny instead nominated to "withdraw that answer" before opting not to agree with Mr Shoebridge's assertion that "the best evidence is that everywhere we have had these amalgamations rates have gone up". "I cannot agree with that because I don't know," Ms Doheny said.
