Wakehurst Parkway needs an upgrade
I read with interest the article about the emergency department at Manly Hospital and the fact doctors are urging peninsula residents to be careful over the festive period after 86 patients turned up at Manly Hospital's emergency department needing treatment last Christmas Day (MD, Dec. 20).
I noted the comments by the ED nurse about the attraction of the northern beaches and the fact that they see a lot of water accidents, like near drownings. I read with interest the thankful reassurance from Dr Franks, Manly Hospital's Director of Emergency Medicine that "Manly and Mona Vale hospitals, like all NSW emergency departments, would operate as normal throughout the holiday period".
She also made an important point that these EDs are "here to help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week". What Dr Franks did not mention was that these two hospitals and their emergency departments will not be open next Christmas. They close in late October, 2018.
I acknowledge that the new hospital at French's Forest will provide a larger number of beds and have the best of equipment but will I be able to get there on time along a flood prone Wakehurst Parkway, which may not be upgraded in my lifetime?
