Focus on The Current Unleashed Areas First
THE April minutes of Pittwater Council’s Working Group on the issue of unleashed dog exercise areas (UDEAs) outline issues and opportunities of the six current UDEAs in Pittwater.
The issues relate to the dangers of unleashed dogs near residences, roads and wildlife, and lack of adequate amenities such as fencing, parking, seating and signage. All of the UDEAs have “opportunities” and two have ratepayer funds of $62,000 and $16,000 allocated.
The minutes of the three meetings since then dealt with the suitability of other parks and ocean beaches as UDEAs and not with the unresolved issues of removing the dangers and improving the facilities initially identified, apart from the possible fencing of South Mona Vale headland.
It is hard to see the sense in considering new UDEAs when the current ones need costly upgrading and much more effective and real regulation everywhere, and it is outrageous that the working group is looking at ocean beaches.
It seems no lessons have been learnt from Sutherland Shire’s trial abandoned after two weeks because of huge crowds, dog fights and attacks, damage to the environment, legal and health and safety issues.
The working group also continues to ignore legal advice that the council does not have jurisdiction over beaches below the high-tide watermark and of the dune areas bordering beaches.
